If a dancer uses not merely her body, but also her intelligence and her heart, if the skill and personality of the dancer do not overshadow the dance and its moment of artistic creation, if propriety or adakam is not applied – the dance is tiring to watch. It is the difference between dancing to music and dancing music.
If the various components of performance – the sahitya chosen, the composers selected, the sensitivity of the musicians, the dancer's own choreographic impulse or interpretation of the works chosen, the dynamics between the dancer and the musicians in the moment of concert, the stage and its ambience, the setting of the lights and the sensitive handling of them, the costume, the dancer's ability to carry off a difficult composition or alternatively, not make heavy weather of a simple one – if all these blend naturally without mutual inconsistency, conflict or contradiction, then, and then alone does a sense of harmony and perfection emerge, that makes the individual components intensify the general feeling of goodness, and the general feeling of goodness intensifies the individual components.

On many an occasion when I am dancing, I have felt touched by something sacred. In those moments, I felt my spirit soar and become one with everything that exists.
