The Spanda Dance Company is celebrating 20 years since its inception in 1995. As part of this celebration, a ‘Spanda 20 Seminar’ has been organised. We have always believed in the power and integrity of the margam, at the heart of which lies the varnam. The varnams of the Tanjore quartet, which were so visible and performed with such beauty by dancers of so many banis from the 1960s to the 1980s, are now sadly compromised. The vision and depth of the interpretation of these compositions are a thing of the past. These varnams will be discussed and demonstrated by four of our most eminent and admired senior dancers. The seminar will include inputs by stalwarts from the field of dance, music and temple ritual on the choreography, sancharis and tirmanams of the chosen varnam, as also on the sahitya and the musical worth of the composition.

Musical inputs Smt. R.Vedavalli
Temple rituals and context Dr. R. Nagaswamy and Dr. Chitra Madhavan
